2015-06-14 Liturgy

I. God calls us into His presence

Call to Worship (Ps. 100:1-2)

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
        Who made heaven and earth.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
        Amen.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
        Amen.

Song of Praise - "Come Thou Almighty King" (Trinity Hymnal # 89)
(verse 1)
Come, thou Almighty King,
Help us thy name to sing,
Help us to praise:
Father, all glorious,
O'er all victorious,
Come, and reign over us,
Ancient of days.

(verse 2)
Come, thou Incarnate Word,
Gird on thy mighty sword,
Our prayer attend:
Come and thy people bless,
And give thy Word success;
Spirit of holiness,
On us descend.

(verse 3)
Come, Holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour:
Thou who almighty art,
Now rule in every heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power.

(verse 4)
To the great One in Three
Eternal praises be,
Hence evermore.
His sovereign majesty
May we in glory see,
And to eternity
Love and adore.

II. God cleanses us from sin

(Psalm 1:4-6; 19:12-13)
The wicked are like chaff that the wind drives away.
The wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
The way of the wicked will perish.
        Who can discern his errors?
        Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
        Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
        let them not have dominion over me!
        Then I shall be blameless,
        and innocent of great transgression.

(Kneeling, if able)
(Minute for silent confession)

Please join me in confession of our sin.
        I confess that I have sinned this past week. I have envied those who have more than me. I have looked down on those who have less than me. I have not been merciful to the needs of others. Please forgive me. Apply to my soul the blood of Your Son. Remind me that Your love for me will never end. Amen.

(Revelation 5:5; Isaiah 54:7; Zechariah 3:4b; Rom 6)
“Do not weep! Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed! I have removed your iniquity from you! I will clothe you with rich robes! With great mercies I will gather you! With everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you”

        Being united to Christ in our baptism,
        we reckon ourselves dead to sin,
        and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
        Therefore, sin will not reign in our mortal bodies,
        but we are instruments for righteousness!
        Amen!

Songs of Rejoicing -
"Arise my Soul, Arise" (Trinity Hymn # 223)

(verse 1)
Arise, my soul, arise,
Shake off thy guilty fears:
The bleeding Sacrifice
In my behalf appears:
Before the Throne my Surety stands,
Before the Throne my Surety stands,
My name is written on his hands.

(verse 2)
He ever lives above,
For me to intercede,
His all-redeeming love,
His precious blood to plead;
His blood atoned for ev'ry race,
His blood atoned for ev'ry race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.

(verse 3)
Five bleeding wounds he bears,
Received on Calvary;
They pour effectual prayers,
They strongly plead for me;
Forgive him, O forgive, they cry,
Forgive him, O forgive, they cry,
Nor let that ransomed sinner die!

(verse 4)
My God is reconciled;
His pard'ning voice I hear;
He owns me for his child,
I can no longer fear;
With confidence I now draw nigh,
With confidence I now draw nigh,
And "Father, Abba, Father!" cry.

"The Power of the Cross"
(verse 1)
Oh, to see the dawn Of the darkest day:
Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men, Torn and beaten, then
Nailed to a cross of wood.

(chorus)
This, the pow'r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.

(verse 2)
Oh, to see the pain written on Your face,
Bearing the awesome weight of sin.
Ev'ry bitter thought, ev'ry evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow.

(chorus)
This, the pow'r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.

(verse 3)
Now the daylight flees; Now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two, Dead are raised to life;
"Finished!" the vict'ry cry.

(chorus)
This, the pow'r of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;
Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the cross.

(verse 4)
Oh, to see my name written in the wounds,
For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death; Life is mine to live,
Won through Your selfless love.

(final chorus)
This, the pow'r of the cross:
Son of God—slain for us.
What a love! What a cost!
We stand forgiven at the cross.

III. God ministers to us by his word

Ezekiel 17:22–24

Psalm 1

2 Corinthians 5:1–17

Mark 4:26–34

Sermon Text - Philippians 1:12-18

This is the word of the Lord!
        Thanks be to God!

Sermon

Confession of the Christian Faith through the Apostle's Creed:

        I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

        And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord;
        who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary,
        suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.
        he descended into hell;
        the third day he rose again from the dead;
        he ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
        from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

        I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

IV. God communes with his people

Communion Homily with the Invitation and Fencing of the Table

The Lord be with you.
        And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
        We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to our Lord God.
        It is good and right to do so.

It is a right and good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise You, Triune God, and we join our voices with the Angels, the Archangels, and the whole company of Heaven in this hymn of eternal praise:

Words of Institution (Mt 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24; Lk 22:19-20; 1 Cor 11:23-29)
Our Lord Jesus Christ on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said, “Take; eat; this is my body, given for you. This do in remembrance of me.” In the same way, also, He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them saying, “Drink of it all of you. This cup is the New Testament in My Blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Consecration of the Bread (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)
The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
        For we, being many, are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Song during distribution of bread - "Lamb of God"

Consecration of the Cup (1 Corinthians 10:16; 5:7-8)
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?
        For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Song during distribution of wine - (Trinity Hymnal 178, "O Sacred Head Now Wounded")
(verse 1)
O sacred Head, now wounded,
With grief and shame weighed down;
Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns, thine only crown;
O sacred Head, what glory,
What bliss till now was thine!
Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine.

(verse 2)
What thou, my Lord, hast suffered
Was all for sinners' gain:
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior!
'Tis I deserve thy place;
Look on me with thy favor,
Vouchsafe to me thy grace.

Prayers
        Praise and Thanksgiving
        Supplications for the Church
        Supplications for the Nations
        Supplications for individual needs

        The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

        Prayer of Commitment:
We promise to preach the Gospel with hearts of love, rather than hearts of conceit and envy.  Help us to live out the Gospel, not for our glory, but for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Walking by faith, we will give you praise, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
